Within this broad field of expertise, Gavrilakis has developed a distinguished specialization in Byzantine and Eastern Mediterranean artistic heritage, particularly the conservation and restoration of Byzantine icons, historic religious paintings, and artworks of exceptional cultural and historical significance.

He holds a Professional Diploma in Art & Antiquities Conservation and Restoration with a valid professional license. His professional formation has been shaped through advanced specialist education, intensive practical training at Mount Athos, Greece, continuous professional development, and more than three decades of international conservation practice. He further refined his expertise at the renowned Palazzo Spinelli Institute for Art and Restoration in Florence, Italy, specializing in the conservation of oil paintings, gilded artworks, and traditional gilding techniques.

Since 1994, Gavrilakis has undertaken conservation and restoration projects internationally across Greece, Turkey, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Europe, and beyond, applying museum-grade methodologies based on scientific examination, comprehensive documentation, ethical decision-making, and internationally recognized conservation standards.

His extensive professional portfolio includes the conservation and restoration of significant artworks and heritage objects, including works by internationally renowned artists such as Ivan Aivazovsky, Pablo Picasso, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, as well as ancient Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits, Byzantine and Ottoman-era paintings, medieval artworks, frescoes, gilded works, textiles, sculptures, metal objects, paper, and diverse historic and modern collections.

Throughout his career, Gavrilakis has collaborated with respected museums, cultural institutions, ecclesiastical organizations, galleries, and distinguished private collections, including the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki, MOMus – Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki, numerous Metropolises in Greece and Turkey, Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), Maraya Art Centre in Sharjah, and other institutional and private clients internationally.

In 2012, together with his wife and professional partner Vaia A. Karagianni, he founded Ieri Parakatathiki Labs, a specialized art conservation and restoration laboratory undertaking significant cultural heritage preservation projects in Greece and Turkey.

In 2024, VENIS STUDIOS expanded its professional activities in the United Arab Emirates, establishing its professional presence in Dubai and developing collaborations with cultural organizations, galleries, and private collections, including Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), and Maraya Art Centre in Sharjah.
