Revealing a Unique Hidden Byzantine Icon Dating from the
14th and 16th Centuries
Founders of VENIS STUDIOS, Venizelos G. Gavrilakis and Vaia A. Karagianni, senior expert art conservators and restorers, led the remarkable discovery, conservation, and restoration of a double-sided Byzantine icon dating from the 14th and 16th centuries, located in the Church of Panagia Eleousa on the Princes’ Islands of Istanbul. With the support of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Metropolis of the Princes’ Islands, the team carried out meticulous conservation and restorations academic level treatments that brought to light a previously unknown reverse side of the icon, dating back to the 14th century, which had remained hidden for centuries beneath a sealed metal casing. The icon was found in an extremely fragile and sensitive condition, requiring highly specialized intervention. Scientific analysis—including chemical composition and stratigraphic chromatic layer diagnostics—conducted in collaboration with the Ormylia Foundation – Art Diagnosis Center, confirmed the icon’s layered historical structure, dating to both the 14th and 16th centuries. The project emphasized rigorous museum-grade conservation treatments, ensuring both scientific integrity and historical authenticity throughout the process.
The conservation treatment of the large-scale modern painting (8 × 2 m) focused on the removal of extensive surface contamination, consisting of compacted dust and resistant particulate deposits that could not be addressed through simple dry methods. Special organic solvents, specifically formulated for paintings, were applied in a carefully controlled process to eliminate these persistent layers and restore the clarity and tonal balance of the composition. Upon completion of the cleaning, the work was coated with a conservation-grade varnish designed for paintings, both to preserve it against future environmental exposure and to enhance the chromatic depth and visual cohesion of the surface.
