The techniques and methods of art conservation and restoration go hand in hand, and in the 21st century, this field became the province of trained professionals. 

Art Conservation: Denotes the maintenance and preservation of artwork, and its protection from future damage and deterioration. 

Art Restoration: The restoration of artwork revives the intent of the original artist in the eyes of the viewer. Art restoration involves the repairs or renovation of artwork that has already sustained injury or decay, and the attempted restoration of such objects to their original, authentic appearance.
